The Happy Medium

Interaction design has its place, it beautiful dabble point between idea and execution. It is the crucial bridge that takes idea to reality.

I have been thinking about my understanding of interaction design as I am preparing for a BIG round of interviews starting Monday in New York. I still haven’t quite gotten over my Jeff Benjamin SNAFO and I am trying to make sure It doesn’t happen again. So with that this is my idea of interaction design’s place in the process and why I take to it.

I am passionate about strategy. School pounded it into my head and it is almost all that I think about on projects. But all too often does a great idea fall to pieces because of poor execution. And what a disappointment it all becomes.

With regards to interactive assets for brands the piece that takes idea into execution is interaction design. It is the liaison between the two and done properly can drive the execution to success. Interaction design allows for so much input into strategy and execution it is the obvious spot for me.

The happy medium is the wonderful squeeze between idea and execution where interaction design lives.

Huge Brands in Small Places via the Web: Digital Hyper Local

Global brands can have tremendous traction on the local level, if they can find out how to appeal to locals of an area on their terms. We see hundreds of national campaigns and even regional campaigns for huge global brands but not too many hyper local campaigns. Campaigns aimed at a city, not New York City or even Los Angeles City, but Portland Oregon City, or even Boulder Colorado City. But how do brands become a part of a small community? How can they successfully run a hyper local campaign? Like they say, start the campaign at digital and build out. But it takes a bit more than that. What ...

My Interaction Design Philosophy

Jeff Benjamin from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky asked me the other day what my interaction design philosophy was in a phone interview. I totally dodged the question, I didn't know anybody could have a philosophy for interaction design. Hell, I'm still not exactly sure what all interaction design is. I figured this is probably something I should think about. After a bit of searching I found Chad Vavra's Philosophy. I like it, and it lead me to come up with my own: "Complexity, born out of straightforward technology, creates meaningful connections between the human mind and the technological brain. Users and their technology are melded together as the later ...

Personal Branding

Once again SitB&R has had a makeover. And with this makeover comes a whole new identity that hopefully FINALLY makes sense. Personal branding - as far as I know - is pretty important, especially when looking for that first job. So having zachblank.com AND sitbandr.com separate was really hurting me because it was really two separate identities, with neither really representing me. The biggest curse for a brand it having split personality disorder. Something I was definately suffering from. So with this comes the Zach Blank creative revolution. SitB&R will become active again and will explore creativity, branding, strategy, development (brand & code) and try and share some funny thing ...

Wordpress 2.6 - Google Docs

Watch out for the new features in 2.6, they turn Wordpress into the next free online text editor. The new revisions feature really sets it apart and for me makes it a desirable tool for online text editing and private sharing. I wouldnt be suprised to see more talk about Wordpress turning into a suite of tools to be used in this sense. Really cool.

Adobe Flex for Free

Thanks Adobe - after giving you thousands you give me back a few hundred - no really it's great. For those in education (not me anymore!) Adobe Flex Bulder 3 is FREE. I signed up last night and am drooling over my free lagit copy that is soo to be. No idea what I am going to build with it, but it will be sweet to learn. I am fresh with the Actionscript 3 craze, so i hope i can jump right into this puppy. Ideas?

Come on out Zach Blank

Well zachblank.com is out and churning. So here is the transition. Sitbandr is now going to be more about code, dev, tutorials and less about life. zachblank.com will be all about life - more fun, yes - but also a bit more of a jack off fest. It will be a trip writing these two different blogs, but let's see how it turns out.

Signs of a Lazy Web Designer

I have been looking over some past work or revisiting it for whatever reason and in each piece the laziness is just oozing out. Here is my list of lazy web guy characteristics: You see something and remember making a note to fix it later. You make another note. You don't reset CSS - 'meh I'll deal with it if (when) it becomes a problem. You say yes to a client so you don't have to explain 'are you kidding? not for this price!' and email them later to say it's out of budget. The design requires PNGs. 'Time for lunch!' Doesn't work in IE. Time for Lunch, Time for a snack, times for a snack, time for a snack, time for dinner, time for a ...

New York And The new yorks To Follow

Thinking that a week out of the term spent in New York City with a group of smart, funny, dorky, beautiful people would be a vacation would be an ill-founded understatement. For a week spent under this looming grey cityscape offers far more than a vacation. The simplicity of presence leading unexpectedly to friendships found and redefined, careers started and started over, achievements sought and applauded, and moments so soon to be remembered can seemingly be found nowhere else. And it is these moments; these undeniably significant wrinkles that define who we strive to be and they measure to how far from it we are. The top 5 moments by which my trip is defined (in reverse order): 5) Mastering the ...

“I Choose Not To Race!”

A blog is a free form space to explore ideas, thoughts and feelings. There are several types of blogs. Business, self-promotion, SEOcentric, ranting and so on. I started on this blog as a professional exploration of the things I think about and do. Well recently it has been far from that. Recently it has been more about ranting about the people in my life (perhaps a stretch to give them that much credit) who choose not to race. Hopefully you know your Seinfeld well enough to understand the metaphor I am going for here, but if not allow me... I am speaking about the people who know the truth, or outcome of a situation and hide behind their own convictions. They choose ...
